Team-dating has been around for a long time in Japan,
where so called GO-CON parties are a regular part of the weekly dating scene.

-Same-sex groups of friends sign up on GO-CON (also for 1 on 1 dating)
1. post yours profiles.
2. and then invite other teams with the goal of meeting up.
3. Groups of same sex friends will be arranged to meet identically sized groups of the opposite sex in a restaurant.

-Besides increasing each individual's odds of meeting the right partner.
The idea is that it is easier, safer and more civilised to meet in a group.
It also eliminates the prospect of struggling to make conversation on your own with a stranger.
It takes the embarrassment out of a regular meeting.
